EKKO'S STORY
Ekko was a son of the well-known N UCH N JCH Bamse I 22514/98, a popular sire in Norway, who sired a number of show and hunting champions. His breeders were my friends Michael and Wendy Sharman of the Naraena Norwegian Elkhounds, who made the long trip to Norway with Elsa in July 2006. Great care was taken in researching the lines of the stud used in order to safely enrich our small gene pool. From his sire, Ekko inherited length of leg and a beautiful, clear colour, and this he has passed on to his descendants.
Ekko was a nice boy to live with. He was a calm and sensible dog, if somewhat singleminded at times. His favourite human was my son, Conor, but he thought Stuart was pretty cool too and enjoyed his trips to his babysitter to play with Bella.
He had a comical manner which never failed to amuse. He had a very acute sesnse of smell which got him into all kinds of scrapes. He liked chasing birds. He also liked toys and chewies, and playing with humans. Like Raider, he liked watching television, but unlike Raider, he rarely sat on my knee. His trademark was the full-body hug with dewclaws embedded in your neck. Ekko liked humans but LOVED other dogs. Ekko's best friend was Raider, of whom he was slightly in awe. We called them Darby and Joan. He found it hard coping with being the only dog in the house since Raider's death, until he was joined by Raider's grandson, Gunnar.
In the ring, he had a number of BOBs and Group placings, but he was not the most enthusiatic showman, unlike his kennelmates.
Ekko sired his first litter in August 2012 at Branika Kennels. Two of this litter were exported to Holland, where the bitch, Branika Bestla, gained the Junior Champion title, which was soon followed by her International title. His second litter was born in January 2014, at Laakso Kennels. A bitch from this litter is being shown in the UK. A third litter, a repeat of the first, was born at Branika Kennels in May 2014. A dog and a bitch from this litter are being shown in the UK and another bitch has been exported to France. The dog, Branika Dane, was Best Puppy in Show at the NECGB Ch. Show in 2015.
Ekko was retired from stud at the end of 2014. He lived out his life in retirement from shows on the sofa at home, which is where he preferred to be.
