Raider was the litter brother to our Minnie and the son of Lizzie. As a small pup, he was known as "Red Dog", as that was the colour of the wool collar he wore. Choosing him was not easy, as he was one of two particularly nice males in an outstanding litter of four dogs and three bitches. However, something about him stood out and I was attracted by his calm demeanour. Although every bit as friendly and outgoing as the rest of the litter, he was obviously a thinker, and would spend time watching the other puppies and passing humans with a look of real intelligence. Even as an adult, he liked to sit outside in the garden and watch the birds and planes fly overhead.
He was 53cm tall at the withers.
In the house, his favourite place was on his Mum's lap, like a big cat! He liked watching TV, and was always engrossed during nature programmes. Once Ekko had matured a bit, Raider decided that he was not so bad after all. The two were pretty inseparable, and spent most of their time playing together.
Raider was not the sort of dog that would tolerate rough treatment or shouting. He was quite dignified. He did his best to please, and was sensitive to my mood changes. He was his Mummy's boy.
At shows, he had a "hitlist" of favourite people who fed him treats - he liked them even better if they had bitches!
Raider was an outstanding show dog. He gained his Junior Warrant by the age of thirteen months, despite his habit of acting the goat in the ring on occasions! In 2005, he gained his crown and in 2006, he attained his ShCM. He won 8 CCs, 5 with BOB and 16 Reserve CCs. The icing on the cake was his place in the Hound Group at Three Counties. We were also absolutely thrilled when Raider won BIS at the NEAS Championship Show from the Veteran Class in October 2009. We felt that he was very close to the Standard, and most judges seemed to agree with us.
Raider sired his first litter in July 2004. The mother was our Spooky. We were very pleased with the quality of this litter. His daughter, Conrick Bereth, had her own first litter in May 2008 and offspring from this litter have been winning well at Championship shows. Puppies sired by Raider were born at Barbelka Kennels on Christmas Day 2008, his second litter. A third litter was born on the 9th March 2009 at Grasilva Kennels. This litter contained his first Champion, Ch Grasilva Gwendoline Mary. Two little girls were born on the 17th November 2009 at Torfi Kennels, his fourth litter. Some puppies from these litters were shown, making Raider the runner up top sire for 2009 (NECGB Annual Points Trophy). Raider sired his fifth litter in May 2010 and from this litter, his daughter Bella came to join us at Kinderhorn. Another litter mate resident in Australia gave us his second Champion offspring, Australian Ch Barbelka Promien Halgrove. Raider's sixth and final litter was born at Powdermill Kennels on 11th November 2011. Two offspring from this litter were shown, and a third is at Kamgaard Kennels in the USA, where in 2015, she attained her title. She is now Am Ch Powdermill Remember Me.
Raider died very suddenly in March 2013, three days after placing third in Veteran Dog at Crufts, his last show. It was profoundly shocking. He was an exceptional dog in every way – a very successful show dog, a good sire, a favourite with people at home and at shows, a dog with a personality as big as a galaxy and my dearest love. We have owned dogs of a similar type and related pedigree for many years, and he and his sister were the last of their kind. We are not breeding dogs quite like that in this country any more, and that breaks my heart more than anything.
